Happy New Year!
A little late, but whatever…
To start off 2025, I redid Acei.us. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! I decided to go with a more minimalist look, and I took inspiration from Bear and Werc‘s appearance. Once again, I created a new a custom WordPress theme, but this time I actually took time to make the theme usable by any website, so it is now available on my GitLab. Since I don’t know if it’s good enough for WordPress.org’s repository of themes, I haven’t submitted it, but perhaps I will eventually. This one doesn’t use Twig templates through Timber, and the experience actually wasn’t so bad!
I am getting a little annoyed with WordPress. I know some people complain about Gutenberg, the new ‘block’ based editor, but I actually quite like it. However, I have switched to the classic editor, because for some reason LanguageTool doesn’t work in Gutenberg, which is really annoying. I’m not designing an actual website, I’m just writing text, so the classic editor works just fine, but still I do wish I could use Gutenberg. WordPress also ships an annoying script with each page which not only is massive but does things I don’t want it to. I like emoticons more than emoji, so I should figure out how to turn that off. While I have considered switching blogging software, I do worry about killing links (I am seemingly the only one who worries about this), and WordPress is just the best option that I’m aware of honestly. Writing my own CMS sounds kind of fun in theory, but honestly it’s way more work than I care for at the moment.
Anyway, my New Year’s resolutions are as follows:
- Update Acei.us once a week. This can be the new now page, or even writing a blog post!
- Have more meaningful relationships with a smaller set of people, instead of having lots and lots of ‘friends’ who I don’t know too well.
- Contribute to an open source project. Used to do this on occasion, and for some reason stopped.
Wish me luck!
